A 3-0 victory for Uruguay in last night’s Copa America final meant that busty Paraguay superfan Larissa Riquelme was unable to strip naked in celebration.
Much like a similar but far less likely promise at last year’s World Cup, Riquelme had promised her countrymen that she would get her kit off at the final
whistle if Paraguay managed to best the duo of Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan.
"If Paraguay win the Copa America then, I shall pose nude on the pitch,'' Riquelme had said prior to Paraguay’s meeting with Ecuador earlier in the competition.
In the end, however, the team that managed to somehow make it to the Copa America final without a game (earning 3 points in the group stages and winning twice on penalties in the knock-out rounds), were routed 3-0 by a rampant Uruguay.
Diego Forlan struck twice for his country, with strike partner Luis Suarez helping to put the tie beyond plucky Paraguay. A proud Forlan later told reporters that with his victory, he had enshrined himself in South American folklore.
"My grandfather won it, my father won it and now I have won it. It is a pride for the family," he said.
"Three generations of my family have won this tournament - Forlan will be the last name in history of football.
After losing their chance to join the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in the process last night, Paraguay’s next chance for glory and Larissa’s next hope for fulfilling her promise would appear to be the 2014 World Cup. It’s going to be a long three years...
